BIOSKETCH

Adriana Dumitras received the Ph.D. degrees in Electronics and Telecommunications from the "Politehnica'' University of Bucharest, Romania, and Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of British Columbia, Canada. She was a National Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Toronto, Canada.

Prior to her joining Apple Inc. as a Senior Scientist, Adriana Dumitras was a Senior Technical Staff Member with AT&T Labs - Research, USA, a Tenured Associate Professor with the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications at the "Politehnica" University of Bucharest, Romania, and held R&D positions with the Vision and Scanning Group of the National Research Council of Canada.

Her main contributions to research and development consist of content-based video encoder optimization algorithms (with application to video capturing, entertainment quality coding and broadcasting of standard definition and high definition sequences, video-on-demand, and video conferencing), and classification methods and systems (with application to retrieval in image/video databases and spatial/temporal scalability). 

Her research interests are in the area of multimedia signal processing: analysis, representation, retrieval and transmission.

Dr. Dumitras is a Senior Member of IEEE. She was elected a member of the Multimedia Signal Processing Technical Committee (MMSP TC) of the IEEE Signal Processing Society and a member of the Multimedia Systems and Applications Technical Committee (MSA TC) of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society. She is the Area Editor of Columns and Forums (2006-2008) of the IEEE Signal Processing Magazine. She was a Guest co-Editor of the special issue "Network-Aware Multimedia Processing and Communications" in the  IEEE Journal on Selected Topics in Signal Processing (2007), a Guest co-Editor of the special issue "Video Analysis and Coding for Robust Transmission" in the Eurasip Journal on Applied Signal Processing (2006), and an Associate Editor of IEEE Signal Processing Magazine (2003-). Dr. Dumitras was a Technical co-Chair of the IEEE International Workshop on Multimedia Signal Processing (MMSP'2006); an Area Chair, Track Chair, Special Session Organizer, Session Chair, and  Technical Program Committee Member at IEEE ICIP, ICASSP, MMSP, ICME and ISCAS conferences. She was the head of the Canadian delegation at ISO/IEC/JTC 1/SC29/WG 11 (MPEG) from December 1998 to July 1999, and a voting member of the Canadian delegation at the same organization from 1998 to 2000, contributing actively to the development of the MPEG-7 standard.

Adriana Dumitras was the youngest co-recipient of the Romanian Academy Award (1996). She was the recipient of a TEMPUS-JEP scholarship from the European Union, held at the Institute of Circuit Theory and Telecommunications, Technical University of Denmark (1993). Recent projects (iChat and iSight) that she worked on at Apple Inc. were featured on CNN on June 23, 2003 and TIME Magazine, issue of July 2003. The current project (H.264 video codec) that she has been working on at Apple Inc. won the Digital Video Professional Association's "Best of Show Award" at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), April 22, 2004. She was selected to be profiled in several Marquis Who's Who publications (2006-).
